At FlexSea, we are committed to advancing sustainable materials that redefine the possibilities of bioplastics. Over the past year, our team has achieved significant milestones, demonstrating the exceptional environmental performance of our seaweed-based materials. In this article, we outline the key certifications and recognitions that highlight the sustainable credentials of our innovative formulations.

Home Compostability Certification

Our bioplastic pellets have successfully passed the rigorous EN13432 home compostability tests, which assess biodegradability, disintegration, ecotoxicity, and material composition. The results reveal that our materials degrade in less than half the allocated time for the first two tests, breaking down faster than common organic waste like orange and banana peels.

Despite this rapid decomposition, the pellets maintain an 18–24 month shelf life, ensuring durability during use without compromising their end-of-life sustainability. Furthermore, plants such as barley and sunflower flourished in compost containing the degraded material, demonstrating the absence of harmful residues and the material’s alignment with circular economy principles.

Biobased Carbon Content

FlexSea’s bioplastics have also achieved a 97.7% biobased carbon content, earning the prestigious top accreditation of 4 out of 4 stars. This designation signifies that nearly all the carbon in our formulations originates from renewable biomass sources, as opposed to fossil fuels.

To put this achievement into context, the minimum biobased carbon threshold for the 4-star certification is 80%. By significantly exceeding this standard, FlexSea is positioned at the forefront of next-generation bioplastics, delivering materials that are both high-performance and deeply rooted in sustainability.

Plastic Free Certification

In addition to our compostability and biobased achievements, FlexSea materials have been officially certified as free of conventional plastics. Unlike traditional plastics such as polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), PET, PBAT, PBS, and HDPE, our formulations contain no synthetic plastic polymers.

The absence of these polymers ensures that FlexSea materials do not contribute to the proliferation of “forever compounds”, microplastics, or toxic residues often associated with conventional plastics. This certification further underscores the environmental integrity of our materials, aligning with our vision for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Conclusion

These certifications collectively reinforce FlexSea’s position as a leader in the development of environmentally responsible bioplastics. By combining rapid compostability, high biobased carbon content, and the absence of conventional plastic polymers, our materials set a new benchmark for sustainable innovation.

As we continue to advance our research and collaborations, we remain dedicated to delivering scalable solutions that align with global efforts to combat plastic pollution and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
